EURISGA Honours Class Course
Policies, Negotiations and Experiential Learning
This Honours Class provides highly motivated undergraduate students from all Leiden University faculties the interdisciplinary opportunity to deepen their knowledge on real-life topics related to the European Union and apply them in the context of a simulation of the European Council. The course seeks to explore negotiation, diplomatic tactics and techniques and in-depth knowledge of EU policy-making in an active and experiential manner, and places you and your fellow students at the centre of the learning process, by continuously engaging you through interactive lectures, practical skill sessions and interim mini simulations as well as the immersive full day European Council simulation. You will understand the nature and functioning of major EU institutions, their power and role in the policy making process from a historical and theoretical perspective and will have the opportunity to put your knowledge into practice, by taking on the role of a policy maker and negotiating policy proposals with your counterparts. You will also examine and analyse in-depth the policy challenges related to the EU, European and global policy challenges. As a result of this practical experience you will hopefully become well-versed in EU affairs and will have the chance to hone not only your negotiation and public speaking skills, but also your inter-personal negotiation skills.

In 2023, the course served as preparation for the annual EuroSim Simulation that took place in January 2023 in Cardiff, Wales. The EuroSim event challenges students to take on the role of key policy-makers and member states in order to negotiate core policy proposals and outcomes during a four-day intensive simulation with over 200 participants from more than 20 universities. Each EuroSim has a specific theme related to the real-world policy agenda of the EU, helping students to deepen their knowledge of the EU and hone their public speaking, negotiating, leadership and diplomatic skills.
It was the first time a team from Leiden University took part in the simulation and it was crowned with a resounding success: three students from the Honours Class Team were selected to receive the Simulation Awards of ‘Best Debater’ of the entire simulation: Aneta Migátová, and two ‘Best Delegate’ awards in their simulation groups: Lieve Williams and Gergely Török, thus making the Leiden University / FGGA Honours Class Team the most successful team of the entire Simulation. In 2024, the Honours Class Simulation took place in Brussels and in 2025 it took place in The Hague, coinciding with the Annual Jean Monnet lecture event of the Danish Ambassador to The Netherlands.
